AKC herding dog breedsAKC Herding - descriptionThe Herding Group, created in 1983, is the newest AKC classification; its members were formerly members of the Working Group. All breeds share the fabulous ability to control the movement of other animals. A remarkable example is the low-set Corgi, perhaps one foot tall at the shoulders, that can drive a herd of cows many times its size to pasture by leaping and nipping at their heels. The vast majority of Herding dogs, as household pets, never cross paths with a farm animal. Nevertheless, pure instinct prompts many of these dogs to gently herd their owners, especially the children of the family. In general, these intelligent dogs make excellent companions and respond beautifully to training exercises. Some herding dog breeds work well with any kinds of live stock, while other herding dogs have been bred for generations to work with specific kinds of animals. The herding breed has developed working characteristics which enhance their ability to handle live stock, include cattle, sheep, and reindeer. The term herding dog is used to describe livestock guardian dogs. The main function of this type of dog breed is to guard live stock and other animals from predators and theft. Herding dogs do not guard flocks but move them. Dogs have learnt to herd live stock in a variety of different ways. Some herding dog breeds, such as the Australian Cattle Dog, is known to nip at the heels of animals. Some dog breeds get in front of the live stock and use what is sometimes referred to as "out staring" the animal to add fear; the Border Collie is a perfect example. Herding dog breeds have physical characteristics that help them work better, which include stamina, endurance and speed. This type of dog is often chosen as a family pet because of their intelligence and beauty. However, always be aware that a herding dog has been bred to be a work dog, and therefore should be kept active at all times. Herding breeds include the following: AKC Herding dog breeds list |
