We can list some special kinds of dogs that we not normally hear about and that are not usually seen in a familiar environment as rare dog breeds. Sometimes, they can be even extinct. In order to find a solution for this extinction problem, some breeders are taking care of these rare dog breed in order to keep then as far as they can from the extinction ways.
These dogs might be very hard to find, but they are not necessarily more expensive than the dogs belonging to the breeds with bigger population.
These "special" and rare dog breeds were bred in order to fulfill the necessities of their owners according to their specific place of living and its particularities. For example, if the dog was bred with hunting purposes, then the dog should have special skills and characteristics to hunt the type of animals found in that specific area. Some other breeds were also called "rare" because they were limited to the royalty, to serve as companion, guardianship, bed warming and so on.
Some that used to categorized as rare are no longer so because of the popularity they have gained lately such as the Shar Pei which is now recognized by the AKC
